My Orkin Commercial!
March 9th, 2010

No, the bug was not CGI. It was there, and it was juicy. We shot this spot pretty close to the Brady Bunch house, which brings me to a video recently released by my Upright Citizens Brigade sketch comedy team, The Space Program. I’m Cindy Brady.

Strange that I got hired to do an Orkin spot just a couple of months after they took such good care of us. We were thrilled with the work that Orkin did on our house, and it was a reliable and affordable $2225. The purchase agreement when we bought the house stated that the seller was to have the termite work done. Well, no work was done and it’s doubtful that the termite company that they ‘hired’, Commitment Exterminators, even exists. The house bolting team told us that it had been at least 10 years since any termite folk had treated anything down there.

We try to support small businesses as much as possible, but with certain professions where criminals run rampant (movers, contractors, mechanics, etc.) it’s just less risky to go to the big guy.

When the Kiddies Inherit the Earth…
March 6th, 2010

…it’ll be in good hands (provided we don’t screw it up beyond recognition first). Our six year old friend, Xander, recently drew us a picture. It’s the story of a robot that plays, breaks, gets recycled into a can, and then the can gets thrown in the garbage.

Xander's world

So he threw the can in the trash at the end. My brother was drawing bridges over rivers of blood and decapitated heads at this age. My point is, he could have drawn anything, and he drew a story about recycling. And a cool robot.

He put Armand and I in the drawing too, over on the left :)

New Plan – Big Changes.
March 5th, 2010

Remember our original space plan? Well, as these months have been a-draggin’, we’ve been a-thinkin’. We initially wanted to build this:

Western Interiorsphoto: Western Interiors

Now we’ve fallen in love with this:

blank slate

Yeah. I know. Our yard. We love the straw bales. We love the warmth and the smell. We love that we can circle ‘um up for a bonfire or set them aside for a big play with the puppies (and one day, kiddies). We love that we can set ‘um up in rows for our future movie nights. We can shove a few together and nap or read in the sun or shade. The flexible layout works in ways that the built-in just doesn’t, and when we’re trying to maximize the space, that’s key. The bales are much more comfortable than a stucco-n-cushion situation. On top of us just liking this idea better, it also costs a lot less and is a much easier project to bring forth. Win win win.

I can go to some French, Ethiopian, Tibetan, Ukrainian, etc. stores for some fabulous textiles to throw on top of the bales, sew into pillows, and wrap around us on chilly nights, mixing in a bit of Global Folk with the Country.

You’ll also notice that we’ve decided to project movies onto an already existing wall. It’ll need to be extended and smooth stuccoed, but it’s a much more efficient plan that the fabric-and-telescoping-pole scenario that was my initial idea.

Check it out:

new Upper Yard space plan

You might notice that I’ve got “spiral stairs from Master” and “French doors from kitchen” on the new plan. This is because – big change – we’ve decided to add a second floor to the Main House. Yeah – I told you it was big. Instead turning the garage into a two story Guest House/Studios with three rooms and a bathroom, we are going with a one story, one room and full bath Guest House/Studio. The second floor of the Main House will have a nice, large (relatively large) Master Suite and two more bedrooms.

This new plan will expand the living space from the current 796 square feet to approximately 1900, and will be much more likely to get permitted. A big thank you to Michael and the team at White Castle Construction (the folks who bolted our house to the foundation) for the amazing work. They bolt a single story home as if it were a three story home. That means if an earthquake ever hit, our bolting is designed to keep three stories of house from collapsing into wreckage. It’s years of experience that lead to that kind of intuitive policy making.

Although it’s taken so long to get to this point, I’m really happy about it. We’ve had time to really think about the best way to use this space. I’m sure that we’ll have more plan changes as we go, but because we’re learning along the way. I’ve loved sharing this process with you :)

Nine Months of Backyard Demo. Done. DONE!
March 3rd, 2010

Sweet relief. Cue the victory music. Walk with me, will you?

After closing on TheLOH at the end of April 2009, demolition on the Upper Yard began in June.

From the concrete sea…

looking back

looking back

…to the first ceremonial swing of the sledgehammer…

looking back

…to the smashing…

…and smashing (and smashing and smashing and smashing)…

…and the hauling (and hauling and hauling and hauling).

Remember The Mold House?

Remember the five layers of concrete surprise under the top layer?

Finally – a blank slate.

blank slate

We picked up some straw bales from the local tack & feed shop and had a bonfire on our new dirt lawn. After all those years in NYC and all these months of hard labor, it was so, so sweet.

Destruction, over – construction, commence!

Tomorrow, I’ll show you the new and improved Upper Yard plans…

Final Day of Upper Yard Demolition!!!
March 2nd, 2010

Remember this stem wall that we found? It predates the homes on the block (pre-1925) and extends about 9 feet, across property lines, to – oh – infinity and beyond? Don’t know or care.

stem wall

Well, it was too thick and well made (reinforced with rebar throughout) for the 8 pound sledgehammer. Enter Jack.

stem wall

A quick trip to the Home Depot tool rental department, and we had our sweet harbinger of destruction.

stem wall

This baby is heavy. Seventy pounds of smashing power.

Stop by tomorrow. We’ll sum up the entire 9 month demolition and show you some pics we had been longing to take – the blank slate.

Bushwhackin’: Day 6 – Still More Trash
March 1st, 2010

Will the trash ever end? Look at what we’ve unearthed now:

trash

trash

trash

Dominoes, Christmas balls, ball balls (of all sizes), tiles, a rake head, yogurt, Elmer’s glue, Easter eggs, doorknob fixtures, doorbell fixtures, a saw blade, ribbon, a disintegrating tee-shirt, tar paper, toy people, building blocks, plastic bags, a paint roller, a “Do Not Remove” notice from The Gas Company (new flash: it got removed), a mop head, gum wrappers, push-pop sleeves, plastic cutlery, a flashlight handle, and curly wood. Have I missed anything?

trash

Chili Mix, anyone?

trash

I think that the only place left to find trash is under the brush mountain we’ve made. We’re still wondering how to get this out of here…

trash

…before it reasserts itself any further.

trash

Not bad for 6 full days of work down there. We’ve had a lot to contend with.

Bushwhackin’: Day 6 – Timber!
March 1st, 2010

The trees must come down. “Tree of Heaven” they are called, but they stink like hell. The leaves smell like a garbage can. Before you jump on this green gal for chopping down trees, let me remind you that we call this lil’ casa The Little Orchard House. At this point, the plan is to plant an avocado tree, citrus tree, apple tree, pomegranate tree, and a laundry detergent tree (more on that later).

Let’s begin!

First, in the Upper Yard, Armand threw this thing into a Y of the tree.

Timber!

Timber!

Then he tossed his end to me down in the Lower Garden, scrambled down the ladder, and put our new chainsaw to work. No pics of this part – hands were full.

Slice it!

Timber!

Timber!

Next, he tossed the branches up top and cut them into more manageable logs and tinder.

Timber!

Enter new toy #2.

Hot.

Fortunately, the wood part of this tree smells beautiful. Almost ready for a bonfire :)

Shall we catch up?
February 27th, 2010

I’ve missed you!

We’ve been very busy here, and I’d love to begin filling you in. Today, I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of our family.

Meet Buddy!

Meet Buddy

He’s a snuggly guy.

Meet Buddy

We rescued him from the OC Pound on Valentine’s Day. He is quite the love bug.

Meet Buddy

He’s 5 months old and was brought in as a stray. We think he’s a Schnauzer mixed with something else. Any ideas?

Buddy, Fenway, and I enjoyed a nap together in the yard a few days after he joined the family. (Thank you, Armand, for being so stealth with the camera!)

99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall!
January 25th, 2010

99 bottles found in the brush seemed like the ideal photo op.

Two rows:

Bud Light is the fav by far…

… with Corona in second place…

… and a few randoms tossed in.

What else will we find?
